Pattern Analysis of Digital-based Assessments in Switzerland (PANDA)

Compared to traditional performance measures, digitally based performance measurements (DBAs, also called computer-based performance measurements) capture process data, such as students’ decisions and their interaction with the performance setting. These process data provide information about the actions students take while solving test items. PANDA examines patterns of use (e.g., response and reaction times, number of clicks, skipping) that result from students’ actions on the DBA. Student usage patterns contribute to the understanding of processes in the course of performance measurements that are relevant to administration in schools, in the classroom, as well as in teaching.

Using process data from the Verification of the Attainment of Basic Competencies (Überprüfung der Grundkompetenzen, ÜGK), the main goal of the project is to identify usage patterns related to task solving in different school languages in the ÜGK pilot data collected in 2022 (4th school year HarmoS, respectively 2nd grade). PANDA contributes to a better understanding of how ÜGK, and assessment in general, should be developed and implemented for 8-year-olds, and informs test developers, practitioners, researchers, and policymakers.
